The firm was founded in 1927 by W B Burnett Esq., and was situated in Station Place, adjacent to Finsbury Park Train Station. The main business at that time was the management of estates of houses in the area, built mainly since 1870, which were let to tenants paying a weekly rent. Apart from estate management and lettings, there were a small number of houses sold to owner occupiers.
In 1960, Mr Burnett retired and the ownership of the business was held by the Davies family, and the firm was renamed Davies & Davies. In 1974, Malcolm Levy joined the firm followed in 1975 by Mark Davies. Both were born locally and attended local schools, two of Mark's children live locally and two of Malcolm's family work in the firm, so Davies & Davies can be truly called a local, family firm.
As a local firm, Davies & Davies are committed to supporting the local community. Malcolm Levy has been a governor of Stroud Green School since 2007. The firm has supported various local organisations over the years and looks forward to continuing their support in the future.
The residential nature of the area has changed over the years, and since 1989 there has been a resurgence of the private landlord, with Finsbury Park now sought after by buy to let (as they are now known!) landlords keen to buy property in an area with exceptional transport links to the City and West End. Tenants appreciate the ease to get into work and the closeness to the best nightlife areas, whilst the local restaurants of Stroud Green Road offer a variety and quality unmatched for miles. Many tenants move on from renting and having fallen in love with the area, end up buying locally. The houses range from converted flats in wonderful Victorian houses to medium sized, 2 floor houses and large 3 floor houses, almost all built from 1870 to 1885.
The firm has moved premises several times over the years and is now located in the most prominent position in Stroud Green Road, on the corner by the traffic lights with Tollington Park. The building has a Grade II listing, and was a Gentleman's Outfitters until 1996. We have retained the "knickers drawers" as some locals call the bank of glass fronted drawers which cover a whole wall; there is also the original spiral staircase, built in wrought and cast iron, leading from the ground floor, and many other special architectural features both internally and externally to this wonderful old building.
